Royal Navy Frees Pirates After Disarming Them

Apparently, the Royal Navy can only arrest suspected pirates if they are caught in an act of piracy. 10 heavily armed suspected pirates in skiffs we disarmed before being released:
“Clearly, with all the weaponry in the skiffs, there was an intent to commit piracy, but we hadn’t actually caught them in the middle of an attack so we had to release them.”

All the weapons and ammunition were confiscated and the ten men were piled into the larger of the two skiffs, provided with enough fuel to get them to the Somali coast and told to go home. Some of the fuel was then put into the other skiff and set on fire.

Indian Navy Sinks Pirate Ship Fishing Trawler

The Indian Navy Frigate INS Tabar reportedly sank a suspected Somali pirate mother-ship yesterday. From what we gather, the Burum Ocean was fired upon and sunk after resisting the approach of the Indian Navy ship. The Burum Ocean was a Russian built trawler used by Somali pirates to launch small boats used in pirate attacks.

News sources say the pirates fled their sinking ship in two speedboats.

There has been a flurry of pirate activity this week, including the capture of a large Saudi oil tanker which stunned the international community for its distance from the coast and the size of the ship captured.

Somali has reputedly given the Indian Navy permission to enter its territorial waters to pursue pirates. India is one of numerous countries with warships in the area to combat piracy.

Update: As it turns out, the vessel sunk was actually a Thai fishing trawler that had been boarded by pirates. One crew member was rescued after six days adrift at sea. Another did not survive and the rest are still missing.

Pirates Magazine

Shack friend Jeff Menges let me know about Pirates Magazine the other day. They seem to cover a lot of festivals, news, interviews and history. Its a quarterly and costs $26.00 to subscribe for a year. They say the magazine is available in some major book retailers in the U.S. All of the ads on their site are full of piratey goodness too!

Canadian Helicopter Scares Off Somali Pirates

A Sea King helicopter from HMCS Calgary scared off two small skiffs that were attacking a commercial fishing boat in the Gulf of Aden. The pirates fled back into Somali waters. Meanwhile, the UN has indeed passed a resolution allowing foreign warships to enter Somali waters to combat piracy.

Stuart Gordon also planning Pirate movie

I have heard from more sources that another Pirate movie is being planned by Stuart Gordon. Gordon is known for films in the horror and sci-fi genres, so his could be an interesting piece. I have not really heard of any pirates movies in the horror genre before (although horror is not something that typically interest me, so I may have over looked them). Click here for more info.

The Million Pirate March

Ahoy there, during today's 2008 Bay to Breakers footrace in San Francisco, there will be a Million Pirate March along the route! It will be a "celebration of rum, parrots and peg legs."

They have some useful info in their links section, including a downloadable Word document on how to build a pirate ship out of a shopping cart (why they didn't make a webpage out of it, I have no idea).

If their site is correct, there should be plenty of pictures and maybe videos too afterwards. Arrrrr. Click here to go to their site.

Ojai Pirate Faire

CIMG4392, originally uploaded by *bri*.

There is apparently an annual Pirate festival with lots of costumes an reenactment in Ojai (Lake Casitas?) California. The 2008 Festival is slated for September 20th, 21st, 27th and 28th. So mark your calenders! Combined with Talk Like A Pirate Day, we might as well make September into Pirate Month!

Update: A news article I found points to a festival that just happened. Am I talking about two different festivals?

What does a pirate flag advertise?

A fireman has been forced to either take down a pirate flag he put up for his daughter's themed birthday or pay for "advertising consent" because the flag "breaches regulations controlling advertising." The article I found is not very long, but I want to know what this flag is advertising. Death? Pirates? Click here to see the article

Update: I found another article here. Apparently you are only allowed to fly national flags in the UK, everything else is advertising. I wonder if that kind of abridgment of the freedom of speech would 'fly' here in the U.S.
